The following glossary describes commonly used words and phrases associated with content management, organization and publication. If you have questions about a term, phrase or concept not listed below, please contact us.
Content Management - A set of processes and technologies that support the evolutionary lifecycle of digital information, also known as content. Content may take the form of text, images, audio, video, email, web pages or any other type of file or record requiring management.
Content Management System (CMS) - Software used to enter, edit, import, export, schedule and publish websites and other files and information.
Content Types - A set of fields that define the elements that make up a content record used to store a specific type of information.
Domains - Names used to identify and locate a server or resource on the Internet. Domain names are registered with a domain registrar and assigned one or more IP addresses, which computers use to communicate with each other.
Domain Name System (DNS) - A foundation of contemporary internet use, DNS stores and associates many types of information with domain names; most importantly, it translates domain names (computer hostnames) to IP addresses.
Firewall - An information technology security device, either hardware or software based, used to permit, deny or proxy data.
Network - Multiple computers connected together using a telecommunication system for the purpose of communicating and sharing resources.
Operating System (OS) - A set of computer programs that manages the hardware and software resources of a computer.
Uniform Resource Locator (URL) - Also referred to as a link or web address, a URL is a string of text used to locate a specific web page or other resource on the Internet.
Virtualization - A method of partitioning one physical server computer into multiple “virtual” servers, giving each the appearance and capabilities of running on its own dedicated machine. Each virtual server functions as a full-fledged server and can be independently rebooted.
Virtual Private Server (VPS) - The virtual independent servers resulting from the partitioning or virtualization described above.
